For Nelson, social justice work doesn’t stop at the frontlines.
As a Senior Social Equity Specialist at DI, Nelson leverages his wealth of organizing experience to empower the most vulnerable voices in the room. Whether it’s crafting curriculum or leading from the front of the room, Nelson strengthens DI’s equity practices within the organization and through our work with partners. But outside of work, you’ll often find him convening community meetings, facilitating conversations, or organizing clergy as the senior pastor at Beloved Community Church. Before joining DI, Nelson spent a decade doing community organizing and outreach in Ohio, New Orleans, Washington, DC and Missouri. His work on the intersections of theology, race, and politics has been presented at the Harvard Leadership Institute, National Association of Black Journalists, National Association of Black Political Scientists, and appeared in publications such as The Nation. Nelson holds a BA in English Literature from Washington University and an MDiv from Eden Theological Seminary. He is pursuing his doctoral studies in faith-rooted community organizing at New York Theological Seminary.
